Maine Budtender Transaction Checklist
Your Step-by-Step Guide to a Safe & Compliant Customer Experience
Phase 1: Greet & Assess 👋
- Greet the Customer: Provide a warm and professional welcome.
- Check for Visible Intoxication: Visually assess the customer. Remember: It is illegal to sell cannabis to anyone who is visibly intoxicated. If you have any doubts, you must politely refuse the sale.
Phase 2: Verify & Assist 🆔
- Verify Age and Identity: Request a valid, unexpired, government-issued photo ID. Confirm the customer is 21 years of age or older. No ID means no sale.
- Educate and Assist Compliantly: Help the customer with product information, explaining strains, cannabinoids, and consumption methods. CRITICAL: DO NOT make any claims that a product has specific health or physical benefits. Stick to factual product characteristics.
- Calculate and Monitor Purchase Limits: As the customer makes their selections, keep a running total to ensure they remain within the legal limits. Per Transaction Limit: 2.5 ounces of total marijuana. Of that total, no more than 10 grams can be marijuana concentrate.
Phase 3: Finalize the Transaction 🛒
- Confirm Final Packaging: Ensure all products are in or placed into packaging that is child-resistant, tamper-evident, and opaque before handing them to the customer.
- Process Payment: Complete the financial transaction through the Point-of-Sale (POS) system.
- Enter Sale into Metrc: Immediately and accurately enter all required transaction details into the Metrc track-and-trace system. This step is mandatory for state compliance.
Post-Transaction ✅
- Thank the customer for their business.
- Ensure your station is clean and ready for the next customer.

- Watch the Limits: Always enforce the 2.5 ounce / 10 gram rule.
- Metrc is Mandatory: Every single sale must be tracked in real-time.
- No "Freebies": Giving away adult-use marijuana products is prohibited.
